Brazilian E-commerce Grows 16% in Q1 2019

After a great 2018, when the Brazilian e-commerce market experienced 12% revenue growth, the first quarter of 2019 brought more positive results for the segment. According to data by ABComm, the Brazilian Association of E-commerce, there was an increase in revenue of 16% during the first three months of 2019 in comparison to the same period the previous year.

Over 66 million consumers purchased online in the first quarter of 2019, spending BRL 17 billion. ABComm highlights that fashion, electronics and household appliances were the main product categories driving growth in the first quarter. In addition, mobile devices were responsible for 35% of all transactions, outlining the importance of providing a great shopping experience for mobile consumers.

 

Brazilian E-commerce: special dates and forecast

Early in Q2, Mother’s Day, celebrated this year in Brazil on 12th May, was responsible for nearly 10 million transactions, generating revenue of BRL 3.3 billion. The amount was 16% higher than in 2018. The Dia dos Namorados, the Brazilian equivalent of Valentine’s Day, was also a big hit. As per the Ebit|Nielsen estimation, the date generated 12% more revenue than the previous year, reaching nearly BRL 3 billion in sales.

ABComm, as well as Ebit|Nielsen, expect Q3 and Q4 special dates, such as Father’s Day, Dia das Crianças (Children’s Day), Black Friday and Christmas to drive further sales. Both entities forecast growth of 16% for the Brazilian e-commerce segment in 2019.

The continuous growth in the segment highlights the important role it plays in economic development. According to ABComm, there are currently 87,000 online stores in the country, generating over 320,000 direct jobs and nearly half a million indirect ones, with 30% of the positions coming from small and medium sized businesses.
