Highlights of the 2019 BayBrazil Conference

Last month, we sponsored and attended the annual BayBrazil Conference, held in Palo Alto, USA, on August 22nd. This year, the event revolved around “Brazil in the 21st Century,” debating subjects such as finance, entrepreneurship, and technology. Our CEO and co-founder, Ralf Germer, was present at the event and spoke as part of the panel on the topic “Finance goes digital in Brazil: the transformation in banking and payments.”

The event also brought together companies such as Google, Movile, JP Morgan, Redpoint Eventures and Innova Capital. Participants discussed the business environment in Brazil and upcoming trends for the next few years, as well as opportunities for US-based companies wishing to expand into one of the largest markets in Latin America. Today, the country represents 34% of e-commerce revenue in LATAM, according to eMarketer.

One of the aspects that came to light during the event is that every country has its own barriers, and it is up to companies to decide whether or not they want to deal with unfavorable scenarios and build a relationship and story with the region and their community. In Brazil specifically, where 45 million adults do not have a bank account, offering payment solutions that fit consumers’ needs is essential for businesses that wish to be successful. Also, issues such as logistics and complex tax systems can represent significant barriers. For that matter, the event discussed aspects such as payment processing, accounting, and legal affairs.

Panel Highlights

Speaking alongside Avanish Sahai, Global VP of ServiceNow, the 30-minut talk started out with a glance at PagBrasil’s background and purpose – which, from the beginning, has focused exclusively on the Brazilian market. According to Mr. Germer, the country represents “by far” the biggest opportunity in Latin America. “We came across the conclusion that going deeper and broader inside the Brazilian market in terms of service and knowledge development, we can create much more”, said the entrepreneur.

The panel also discussed the perspective of the fintech market in Brazil, especially with the Central Bank’s resolutions to open the market and foster competition. On that topic, Mr. Germer also mentioned that innovation is always welcome in the country: “Brazilians are early adopters; they are happy to try out new things”, he adds.

Further, the conversation also revolved around challenges and opportunities. According to the entrepreneur, digital inclusion is a major driver for e-commerce businesses. Today, 92% of all Brazilian households have at least one smartphone, and many are digital buyers who shop for small purchases. “This is not limited to people who have a bank account, live in a certain region or have certain level of education; everyone wants to participate in this kind of thing”, said Mr. Germer. While there is a lot of talk about inclusion, there are not enough payment methods for this population. “Most companies offer mainly credit cards, debit cards and boleto bancário, but these payment methods don’t really work for all of the Brazilians. So, they continue, somehow, excluded”, he adds.

Mr. Germer also spoke about cash reliance in Brazil and how technology can both include the unbanked populations while also bring innovation into payment methods. To sum it all up, the entrepreneur also spoke out about the challenges of doing business in the country and of the new instant payment model that is being developed by the Central Bank of Brazil.
