Debit card payment processing

In Brazil, debit cards are issued by all major banks and are therefore very popular and widespread. Debit card payments represent a stable 35% of all card payments, and in terms of number of transactions, they have recently slightly overtaken credit cards. Currently, there are nearly 12.5 million or 13% more active debit cards than credit cards on the market. The number is justified in part thanks to beneficiaries of social programs, such as Bolsa Família, who have a debit card to access their benefits. In addition, debit cards are increasingly replacing other means of payment such as boleto bancário, checks and cash.

When it comes to e-commerce, debit card payments require electronic authorization for each transaction. Buyers are redirected to a secure authentication page where they must enter a PIN to proceed. The debit is reflected immediately in their account and we confirm successful payments to you instantly via our API. If you’re selling cross-border into Brazil, be aware that Brazilian debit card payment methods require a local payment processing partner and cannot be directly contracted with a bank or card acquirer from abroad.

Advantages of Debit Cards

By offering debit cards, you benefit from an important growth potential with increased conversions and access to lower income classes where there is a smaller credit card penetration. In addition, there is practically no risk of chargeback, and debit card payments are also perceived as secure by the user. Compared to boleto bancário, the immediate payment confirmation is another advantage.
